Goal:
The goal of this assignment was to make a own hand held hand warmer. It was supposed to increase 25 degrees Celsius.
Our design:
We used wax paper as the outside layer of our hand warmer. We had to use a heat sealer to close off the edges of the wax paper. Inside the wax paper pouch was a secondary pouch and ionic salts (Calcium Chloride) . The interior pouch was made of a Ziploc bag that we cut up and sealed with the heat sealer. Inside of this pouch was water. In order for this to work, we had to pop the interior bag so that the water would react with the calcium chloride. This caused an increase in heat.
reflection:
Overall, this was a pretty cool project! It was so interesting because we got to design a product that is actually used in the real world. I was very pleases with our design. It was very effective. We even made a prototype that increased sixty degrees. Obviously this is not ideal for an actual hand warmer, but it was cool to see the limits of the chemical reaction. This project was interesting and the hand warmers were very fun to make.
